Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the role of viruses in the pathogenesis of asthma
  • Outline and discuss the different phenotypic expressions of asthma such obesity and asthma, occupational asthma and severe uncontrolled asthma
  • Describe and discuss the use of new modalities in asthma treatment including biologic treatments and bronchial thermoplasty
  • Prioritize and select delivery devices for your patients according to their needs and abilities to use them
  • Apply evidence-based principles of weaning to patients receiving mechanical ventilation
  • Propose and order an evidence-based treatment plan for patient with COPD including a judicious use of inhaled corticosteroids when indicated
  • Discuss the epidemiology, burden of illness and pathophysiology of pulmonary embolism and best approaches to treatment including newer oral anticoagulants (NOACs)
