MicroCME: The Evolution of Therapeutic Options in Hereditary Angioedema

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of severe swelling, and recent therapeutic advances have expanded treatment options beyond traditional approaches. However, important knowledge gaps remain regarding emerging therapies, including RNA-targeted therapeutics and CRISPR-based gene editing strategies.

This activity will review current and emerging therapies for HAE, examine the mechanisms, safety, efficacy, and clinical considerations of RNA-targeted therapeutics and CRISPR gene editing approaches, and discuss strategies for effectively counseling patients on treatment options and shared decision-making.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Describe the mechanisms of action, indications, and clinical considerations of current HAE therapies, RNA-targeted therapeutics, and CRISPR gene editing approaches, highlighting their roles in disease management.
  2. Analyze the safety profiles, efficacy data, and limitations of existing and emerging HAE treatments, including RNA-based and CRISPR therapies, to support informed clinical decision-making.
  3. Apply effective patient communication techniques to discuss treatment options, including current therapies, RNA-targeted treatments, and gene editing, addressing patient concerns, adherence, and ethical considerations.

Method of Participation

This activity will take up to 30 minutes to complete. To receive credit, learners are required to view the activity, complete the evaluation, and pass the posttest.
