Addressing Prominent Gaps in Allergy & Asthma Care & Their Impacts on Patient Outcomes (AAN)

While research suggests that microbial imbalances (dysbiosis) are associated with the development and progression of asthma and allergies, much remains to be learned about the exact mechanisms at play. Dr. Zachary will address a critical gap in our understanding of how social determinants of health impact health outcomes of individuals with allergic disease. In particular, poor asthma or allergic crises are attributed to patients’ non-compliance or are difficult to treat, and non-medical drivers of health disproportionately impact disease burden.

This program is a collaboration between the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and the Allergy and Asthma Network (AAN).

2.    Recognize the role of implicit bias in clinical decision making, including its impact on patient-provider communication, treatment, and recommendations.
3.    Apply strategies to screen for social determinants of health, address barriers to medical access and specialty care, and promote health equity in allergy and immunology practice. 
4.    Discuss evidence-based interventions that have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing health disparities.
