Biosimilars: From Understanding to Practice (Non-CME)

Price: Free for Members. $20 for Non-members.

Two modules. 15 minutes each. Available when you need them. This microlearning series lets you focus on the information most useful to you. Choose one module or complete both for a concise look at the science behind biosimilars and the considerations that arise when bringing them into practice.

Module 1 - Biosimilars Basics: What Clinicians Need to Know
Jeremy Katcher, MD
Build a clearer understanding of biosimilars through key themes including approval pathways, naming and identification, and the safety, efficacy, and immunogenicity evidence supporting biosimilarity.

Topics:
•Biosimilars compared with reference biologics and generics
•Naming and identification
•Development and regulatory approval
•Totality of evidence
•Safety, efficacy, and immunogenicity

Module 2 - Biosimilars in Practice: Prescribing and Patient Conversations
Jared Darveaux, MD
Focus on the questions that emerge in practice. Dr. Darveaux explores common patient and provider concerns and ways to communicate about quality, safety and efficacy while supporting shared decision-making.

Topics:
•Interchangeability, substitution, and relevant policy considerations
•Formulary, coverage, and workflow implications
•Communicating quality, safety, and efficacy to patients
•Addressing patient concerns and nocebo effects
•Coding and documentation considerations
•Totality of evidence
•Key misconceptions

This activity is sponsored by an educational grant from Genentech.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for allergists, advanced practice providers, and office staff.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Increase healthcare providers' knowledge and understanding of biosimilars, including their development, regulatory approval, and differences from reference biologic drugs.
  • Enhance providers' confidence in prescribing biosimilars by presenting current evidence on their safety, efficacy, and immunogenicity.
  • Improve providers' skills in communicating with patients about biosimilars, addressing patient concerns, and supporting informed decision-making regarding biosimilar treatment options.
