Course Overview
Join us for this intensive, hands-on, one-day workshop designed specifically for physicians and allied health professionals who prepare allergen extracts for patient care. Whether you're new to mixing or seeking a refresher to align with current standards, this workshop will provide the critical knowledge and practical experience you need to mix with confidence and compliance.
In alignment with USP Chapter 797 requirements, the course emphasizes contamination prevention, standardization, and safety protocols throughout the mixing process. You’ll start the day with engaging didactic sessions covering:
• Immunotherapy basics
• Allergen extracts and standardization
• USP 797 regulations and reimbursement
• Environmental controls and documentation
• Safety issues in the mixing room
Then, put your learning into action with substantial hands-on training in:
• Proper garbing technique
• Glove-tip and media fill testing procedures
• Q&A with expert faculty
You'll also select from a range of small Breakout Sessions tailored to your experience level and professional focus. To secure your preferred session, be sure to rank all four options (no duplicates!) during registration. Breakouts are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis so register early!

Target Audience
Allergy and immunology physicians and their staff responsible for allergen extract preparation.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the key changes to the allergen mixing environment and cutting-edge research to advance immunotherapy.
- Discuss the preparation of an allergen extract kit to include selection of allergens, diluents, and allergen standardization.
- Implement the USP Chapter 797 guidelines for the preparation of allergen extract treatment sets and provide resources to assist allergy practices in meeting the requirements.
- Demonstrate the important tests needed to meet USP 797 standards to include the media fill test and glove tip test.

Cancellation/Refund Policy
All requests for cancellations and refunds must be submitted in writing via email to [email protected] on or before March 25, 2026. Refunds requested by this date will be processed minus a nonrefundable $75 processing fee.
After March 25, 2026, no refunds or cancellations will be accepted. No exceptions will be made for personal or professional scheduling conflicts, weather-related issues, travel disruptions, or other unforeseen circumstances.
Changes and Substitutions:
Registrant substitutions or “swaps” are not permitted. If a registrant is no longer able to attend, they must cancel their registration (subject to the cancellation terms above), and the new individual must register separately at the current applicable rate.

Maureen M. Petersen, MD, FACAAI (Course Director, Planner, Faculty, Reviewer)
Dr. Petersen is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she serves as Medical Director of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology. She earned her BS in Biology from the College of William & Mary and her MD from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Petersen completed her pediatric residency at Tripler Army Medical Center and fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. A retired U.S. Army physician with 29 years of service, she previously held leadership roles including Fellowship Director in Allergy/Immunology and Director of Medical Education at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. She is the Vice President of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and has received numerous teaching awards for her contributions to medical education and mentorship.

Bryan L. Martin, DO, FACAAI (Faculty)
Dr. Martin earned his medical degree and served 29 years in the U.S. Army, during which time he held numerous leadership roles in allergy and immunology. Following his military career, he joined The Ohio State University as Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, Program Director for Allergy and Immunology, Designated Institutional Official, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, and Associate Medical Director for University Hospitals. He also served as Chief of the Division of Allergy and Immunology. Dr. Martin is Past Chair of the ACGME Allergy and Immunology Review Committee and of the International Collaboration in Asthma, Allergy and Immunology (iCAALL). He is currently the immediate Past-President of the World Allergy Organization (WAO) and is a Past President of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI). He has been recognized with numerous honors, including the ACAAI Distinguished Fellow Award, the ACGME Courage to Teach Award, the U.S. Army’s Lewis Aspey Mologne Award, and induction into the 2022 State of Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame.

Michael R. Nelson, MD, PhD, FACAAI (Faculty)
Dr. Nelson earned both his MD and PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Virginia. He began his military career shortly after graduation and held key leadership positions including Medical Director of the U.S. Army Centralized Allergen Extract Laboratory, Program Director, Department Chief, and Director of Army Graduate Medical Education. He later served as Director of Education, Training and Research at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and as Chief Consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General. Dr. Nelson also served as Vice Chair of the ACGME Allergy and Immunology Review Committee. He is currently Chief of the Division of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology at the University of Virginia. Dr. Nelson is President of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and a member of the Executive Committee of the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Vivek U. Rao, MD, FACAAI (Faculty)
Dr. Rao earned his undergraduate degree from Rice University and his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, followed by a fellowship in allergy and immunology at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2006, he returned to his hometown of Odessa, Texas, where he has been in solo practice for over 19 years. Dr. Rao serves as a delegate to the ACAAI House of Delegates and is a member of the ACAAI's Practice Management Committee and Billing/Coding Committee. He is also a board member of the Texas Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Society and chairs its Insurance Committee. In addition, he represents physicians as an alternate delegate to the AMA House of Delegates, serves in the Texas Medical Association (TMA) House of Delegates, and is a member of the TMA Council on Legislation.

Sarah W. Spriet, DO, FACAAI (Faculty)
Dr. Spriet earned her BA in Public Health Studies at Johns Hopkins University and her DO from ATSU - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii, followed by an allergy-immunology fellowship at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. From 2014 to 2016, she served as the ACAAI National FIT Representative and has remained active on a variety of ACAAI committees since then. She served as an active-duty Army physician for over ten years then joined the faculty at the Medical College of Georgia in 2022 where she was recognized as Teacher of the Year by the Department of Pediatrics in her first year. Dr. Spriet currently serves as the Associate Program Director for the National Capital Consortium Allergy-Immunology fellowship training program. She is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and works as a full-time allergist and clinical immunologist at Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center in Northern Virginia.

James L. Sublett, MD, FACAAI (Faculty)
Dr. Sublett is the Co-Founder and Vice-Chair of Family Allergy & Asthma which began in 1979 with one office in Louisville, KY and is now one of the largest practices in the US with 85 allergists staffing over 100 offices in nine states. He is a Past-President of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology (ACAAI) and has been honored by the College with the Gold-Headed Cane Lifetime Achievement Award. He has served on the Board of Directors of the World Allergy Organization (WAO) and is an Associate Editor of the World Allergy Organization Journal. He is Clinical Professor of Pediatric Allergy & Immunology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and served as Chief of Allergy & Immunology for over 19 years through June 2014. He was honored by the University as Medical School Alumni Fellow of the Year in 2021.
