Eastern Pulmonary Conference 2015

The purpose of the Eastern Pulmonary Conference (EPC) is to plan and organize continuing medical education meetings on clinical topics in pulmonary medicine.  EPC blends the interactivity characteristic of small regional conferences together with the cutting edge science characteristic of large national meetings.  The educational goal is to share clinically relevant informatin which improves the diagnostic accuracy and the effectiveness of treatments with practitioners who treat pulmonary diseases.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the current and future treatment options for diseases of the airways: asthma, COPD and bronchiectasis
  • Distinguish COPD from asthma with regard to biomarkers
  • Employ best therapies to improve outcomes in the management of asthma and COPD
  • Discuss the comorbidities that occur in patients with asthma/COPD overlap syndrome and be able to manage them
  • Recognize that asthma, like COPD can be an irreversible lung disease
  • Manage exacerbations in patients with ACOS
  • Outline the advances in bronchoscopic techniques for 1) treatment of COPD; 2) the diagnosis of lung cancer; 3) the ultrasound evaluation of mediastinal disease
  • Explain the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to malignant and infectious pleural diseases
  • Discuss the epidemiology, burden of illness and pathophysiology of primary and secondary causes of pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary embolic disease
  • Discuss the current molecular approaches to the diagnosis of lung cancers and how these advances are changing the treatment choices for these malignancies
  • Explain the recent advances in understanding the pathogenesis of interstitial lung diseases and the advances on treatment in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
  • Discuss treatment options for patients with pulmonary thromboembolic disease
